Parish leaders announce new design district in Jefferson

Parish leaders say a new design district in Jefferson could become a shopping destination, right on the parish line between Orleans and Jefferson parishes.”This region needs a design district like this,” said Jerry Bologna, president and CEO of the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission.More than a dozen businesses that sit along Jefferson Highway are now a part of a designated design district. “Whether their fabricators, iron workers, antique stores, rug stores, we’re making it an official design district,” Bologna said.Parish leaders say the district includes 17 design, home-improvement and furnishing stores.It is based around Jefferson Highway and extends from River Road to Earhart Expressway.The idea came from design districts that are becoming more common in larger cities. The goal is to create a walkable area for locals and tourists to shop.”It’s a place where people know that’s where they want to go, when they want to find the latest designs and best deals, so that’s what we’re trying to create here in Jefferson,” Bologna said.Jefferson Parish Council approved the new district last month.Although several local businesses are already part of the new district, parish leaders hope more will come. “We’re right here at the entryway into Jefferson Parish, but we’re also at the center of the region. I think this is ideal to attract more customers and drive more tax revenue. We want everybody to come here as that destination,” Bologna said.Parish leaders say they plan on adding new district signage to the area.
