Citygate Outlets partners with up-and-coming local artisan to create a spectacular garden of floral wonders

Hongkongers are known for their love of flowers, witness the annual exodus to places like Japan and Korea for the cherry blossoms. But what if we told you the floral magic was right here in Hong Kong?

This winter, Citygate Outlets at Tung Chung has teamed up with Jennifer Hung, a talented local artist known for her paper art and design skills, to create the captivating ‘Wings in Blossom’ aesthetic garden. It’s a visual treat running from January 19 to February 22, 2024, exclusively at the mall.

For Jennifer, a graduate from the London College of Fashion and Parsons School of Design in New York, this collaboration is her debut in the shopping mall scene. At its heart, you’ll find over a hundred meticulously handcrafted paper flower installations, designed to bring some timely Lunar New Year blessings to the public. Among the chosen blooms, peonies stand for wealth, narcissuses bring good fortune, orchids represent happiness, and peach blossoms symbolize the arrival of love. Intertwined with these are graceful butterflies, a symbol of hope. When you step into the mall, you’re immersed in a wonderland where butterflies flutter amidst a tapestry of colorful floral clusters, a joyful ode to the festive season.

But let’s not forget the hard work behind these wonders. Jennifer Hung, the creative genius, spilled the beans, saying, “It took us a solid three months to turn this vision into reality. The trickiest part? Crafting each flower by hand, without a hint of mechanical help.” Take the peonies as an example. Jennifer and her team patiently hand-cut over a hundred petals in four different sizes, curved them into arcs, and painted them in six beautiful gradient colors before assembling them together.

Beyond spreading blessings, Jennifer’s mission is to make paper art and sustainability the talk of the town. In Hong Kong, paper art is still finding its feet, but Jennifer’s determined to change that. “Paper flowers aren’t just eco-friendly, they’re the gift that keeps on giving,” she elaborates. “Unlike silk flowers, which are mostly composed of plastic or real blooms that fade in a flash, paper flowers are weather-proof and can last for ages. Moreover, they are made out of recycled papers.”

Visitors can snap a host of Instagram-worthy shots of this enchanting display at the Atrium on L2 of Citygate Outlets daily from 10am to 10pm.
